stories behind the music
ARTIST: DAVID LAREAU
SONG: “GOOD FROM THE START”
At that point in my life, I was working in a corporate managerial role—because, as it happens, music doesn’t always cover the bills. During that period, I was working overnight shifts for a month, which completely flipped my schedule. I’d come home in the morning and immediately start writing in what I called the “zombie sessions.” It was during those early hours that I wrote High and Low, Hotel Bar, and Good From The Start.
Around the same time, I was reading about the Rolling Stones and discovered their use of what’s now famously known as “Rolling Stones Tuning.” I’ve always found that changing a guitar’s tuning can unlock a new realm of inspiration. While I don’t clearly remember the details of writing the song, I know it came together in a single sitting. As soon as I finished, I was confident the hook was solid and destined to become a single.
The music video was a blast to make. The actress in the video later moved to LA and has since appeared in numerous TV shows and commercials. We filmed over two days, and I’ll never forget that old car we used—it was leaking gasoline fumes into the cab. We both ended up with massive headaches, but it was totally worth it. The live shots were filmed at a bar that, unfortunately, no longer exists. It was midday during filming, but you’d never know it from the after-party that followed. Good times, indeed. –
